Will VNC_Server operate as a viewer on the RISC OS Pi? With today’s multi-tasking these messages suddenly popping up with no clue where from or why can cause lots of frustration. I feel that many error messages were as short as possible due to memory constraints in older machinees, particularly when single-tasking meant that the user knew what was being run at the time.
I am sure there are other similar examples, eg ‘File not found’ should give the name. Please could all uses of NoSuchSWI and NoSuchSWI2 be investigated to see if there is any way to include either the name or number of the SWI that cannot be found?įor example, in the SWINumberFromString_Code Entry in Kernel.s.SWINaming it seems to me that when the label this_swi_nexiste_pas (!) is used, although it knows the name in r1 it uses the useless ‘ SWI name not known’ message. I would claim that only NoSuchSWI1 is any real use, unless you are the developer who knows which SWI has been requested. It appears that there are three variants on a common system message: This would much better use of the scarce resource for testing.
The ‘thought to be good’ rom images would not change day to day but the associated ‘help text’ could draw attention to bug tickets as issues were discovered. Given infinite resource, the present system of identifying stable releases would be sufficient and no user testing would be required. This would encourage users to download them and try them and know which modules are ‘recent’ to help focus testing. A ‘thought to be good’ rom with a note of which modules have been updated recently (and thus require testing) and those that appear to be fairly stable (perhaps with one or two known ‘issues’ stated). It is a great pity that there are no ‘snapshots’ of roms where tinkering on certain modules is complete and has not yet started on some others. Also available is the stable 5.24 rom but this is from December 2018. This means that the daily build always seems to contain some bits (not identified) that don’t yet work correctly.
At present the latest ‘bleeding edge’ daily build rom is available which necessarily contains many mature and developed modules plus a few that are being gradually tinkered with and improved.
